SABBATH
June 1, 2009
SABBATH - Exodus 20:8-11 - Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. It's the 4th Commandment. You shall work 6 days and the 7th day you shall rest from work.
I haven't taken this Commandment very seriously...after all we live in a 24/7 world. And in our 24/7 world it is hard to even take a vacation. We take our cell phones and Blackberry and/or laptop with us to make sure we are keeping up with WHAT? Aren't we supposed to be resting? After all it is a - command(ment). Sabbath means to 'cease' from working and take time to 'see' God. Psalm 46:10
I know I'm asking a lot...a whole day! So let's consider "mini sabbaths", small, doable steps, before we bite into the whole enchilada.
Mini sabbaths can be from one minute to one hour. What can you get accomplished in one minute you ask? Well stop what you are doing right now and close your eyes for 'one minute' (you will need someone to tell you when a minute is up). Now wasn't that a long time? You can read Psalm 1 in less than one minute. You could thank God for who He is in one minute. You could pray a prayer of surrender in one minute. What could you do with 30 minutes? A daily devotional is a great way to start your day! Read a portion of scripture and journal what you think God said to you in those verses. Sit alone in a quiet place and observe the sounds and smells around you. Ask God to search your heart and then listen to what He has to say. Read a book. Summer time is a time of resting and rejuvenation. It is a good time to start a new habit of 'mini sabbaths'. The 'one minute' mini sabbath could be done several times a day.
When are you taking a sabbath? What are you doing during that time? Enjoy the sun/Son, ~ Rhoda
