"I Am My Curling Iron"
April 1, 2010
My favorite curling iron is dying. It's been overused far too long. When I am half way through curling my hair the little white dot gets pink telling me it's becoming lukewarm. I put it down and stop using it until the dot is white again. As I was contemplating my dilemma of an overused curling iron I thought about how I let myself become 'overused'. How I do, do, do until I am not finding joy in serving. Instead of meeting a need I am continuing an obligation. My white hot 'doing' button is turning pink with exhaustion. It takes me quite a little while to look physically presentable each day. If I don't take the time I look like a scary character from a horror movie. It also takes me quite a while each morning to look spiritually presentable. When I don't take the time I need, I more represent the sting of alcohol on an open wound than I do Jesus. Do I hear you saying, "Buy a new curling iron"? My thought exactly! So that's what I did. I set out in search of a new curling iron that would keep its heat. It was difficult to find the right one, hair styles dictate what kinds of curling irons are made and what I needed wasn't fitting the current hair styles.
Eventually I found the perfect one! It was the right size, only had "hot" and was reasonably priced. There was only one left and I grabbed it like someone who hadn't eaten for days and was ravenous. I was so excited! First day of using my new purchase and my curling iron is hot. I touched it to make sure - I have a blister! I am in the process of curling my hair when the curling iron starts to lose heat. What? It's brand new! As I've gotten older my hair has become a nice shade of gray which I get compliments on often. The down side to this is that gray hair is harder to curl so I'm using my curling iron longer on each section. Therefore, my curling iron is becoming over worked. Again when I become over worked I lose some of my strength also. My solution is to change my morning routine. I will curl my hair to a certain point, then work on my face while my curling iron is recharging. It's much like my morning devotional routine. I read my devotional, then I recharge at the feet of Jesus in prayer. That's where I put on my face for the day, then I read my Bible to see if what I was hearing in prayer was correct. I have found that the constant 'doing' is like my gray hair, difficult and tiring to keep up. Just like my curling iron needs to be recharged I do too. What area of your life needs 'recharging'? How will you do that and when will you start?
But He Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray. Luke 5:16 Let the 'Son' shine, ~ Rhoda
